A Hong Kong riff on Seven Samurai, directed by Terry Tong (Coolie Killer). One thing is certain, Tong is no Akira Kurosawa.* Luckily, Seven Warriors doesn't strive to be anything more than an entertaining action movie.

There isn't really anything that sets this apart from its contemporaries, sadly enough, but when you have people like Lo Lieh, Tony Leung, Jacky Cheung, Max Mok, Wu Ma and Sammo Hung (in a small cameo) doing their thing, you still end up having a good time.

I will probably have forgotten most of the movie by the end of next week. I may remember the severed arm sequence a little bit longer though. Who knows.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    *I mean, who is?

  • Review by HKFanatic ★★★

While I doubt many film buffs were clamoring for a Cliff's Notes version of Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai"—a Cliff's Notes version of "Seven Warriors" re-envisioned as a Hong Kong action flick, featuring a bunch of fan favorite actors like Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Jacky Cheung, not to mention a cameo by Sammo Hung? I'll buy that for a dollar! As you might expect, most of the film's runtime is given over to the task of assembling the seven warriors and training the down-on-their-luck villagers to fight back against the encroaching bandits, but the final twenty minutes or so are jam-packed with action (if nothing else, this has to be the most ultra-violent riff on "Seven Samurai" I've yet to see).…

  • Review by Filipe Furtado ★★★½

Sammo Hung produced and did some of the action of this Seven Samurai riff. He gave directing duties to Terry Tong, a solid 80s Hong Kong journeyman who does a very good job of keeping it economical and entertaining. Actually someone should show this for that Twitter blue checkmark, it does Kurosawa's plot, borrows from Magnificent Seven character bits and adds lots of Hong Kong mayhem and gets it done in 95 minutes. What it doesn't has is Sammo's wide range of emotions, so it is more enjoyable than memorable. Adam Cheng leads the great cast which includes young Tony Leung and Jacky Cheung, plus terrific character work by Shing Fui-On and Wu Ma, and Lo Lieh as the main…

  • Review by Ed Küpfer ★★★★

Hong Kong remake of Seven Samurai with a lot of the novel character elements from Magnificent Seven mixed in as well, at 50% the running time. There is true economy of storytelling on display here—that sounds like a backhanded compliment, but I mean it: the story of hiring the Seven that took Kurosawa an hour and half to tell (and took Sturges a full hour), Seven Warriors dispenses with in 20 minutes, while not leaving anything out. Not that this movie reaches the level of transcendence and populist appeal as those two classics, but did either of those films feature a scene of one of the Seven ziplining through a forest in slow motion dropping grenades on the bad guys?

  • Review by matt lynch ★★★½

hugely satisfying if not particularly special. every two minutes or so of SEVEN SAMURAI gets about one here. the last third (the raid on the enemy camp and ensuing big battle) is as good as anything in EASTERN CONDORS. maybe not essential but make sure you get around to it at some point.

  • Review by Lexzilla ★★★

The Seven Samurai remade as a ninety-minute Hong Kong comedy-action film.

It’s a fun enough movie, even if it does lose steam in the middle during the endless prepare-the-village-for-battles scenes. But the end fight is a brutal blast and it opens with a Sammo vs everyone fight cameo, so I won’t complain too much.

It definitely benefits from a stacked cast: Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Adam Cheng, Max Mok, Wu Ma, Jacky Cheung, Lo Lieh and Shing Fui-on, even if not all of them appear to be acting for the same film.

    21/31 Hong Kong Hustle

  • Review by Jack🧠 ★★★★ 3

Sammo Hung truncates Seven Samurai down to a blissful 95 minutes, with his signature explosive action setpieces and tight fight choreography. Is it better than Akira Kurosawa's movie? Of course not. But Seven Warriors carves out its own unique identity - feudal warfare done HK style.

  • Review by The Movie Matt ★★★★

I just spent the last 30 minutes just trying to add this film to the system so I can log it here. I was successful even if a lot of the information has not yet been included.

This is a great 80s style Hong Kong version of Seven Samurai. The action is great (with some awesome performances from Tony Leung, Lo Lieh, and a sweet opening fight sequence for Sammo Hung) and the story is remarkably fun and heart felt. It comes highly recommended for HK action fans.

  • Review by Barton Kimball ★★★

A Chinese Seven Samurai. About an hour of unfunny humor and tedious set up followed an amazing action filled finale.

  • Review by mknusair ★★★½ 1

A mostly enjoyable remake of Seven Samurai. It's less than half the length of Seven Samurai and features Sammo Hung, which I'm pretty sure makes it superior to the original by default? (Alas, Sammo only cameos here, so definitely don't watch it just for him.) Nothing about it stands out as particularly great, but the characters are all decent enough and the action is fun. It slows down a bit in the somewhat uneventful midsection, but it picks up quite nicely with its action extravaganza third act. The action features a satisfying Eastern Condors-esque mix of martial arts fight scenes and Rambo-style explosions and shootouts; many, many squibs were harmed in the making of this film.

if i wasn’t such a devotee of mag 7, i dunno if i’d have ever understood what was going on from one scene to the next. but i had a good time with tony leung’s mischievous performance as the errr, horst buchholz character. he’s so adorably useless and smol?

  • Review by Dominic Mucciacito ★★★

The MVP is the trench coat.
Boss Villain Lo Lieh sports a sick trench coat that he wears off his shoulders like Dr. Strange’s magical cape. It stays in place as he rides horseback, sword-fights, and falls through huts.
He looks decidedly less badass after he finally weaponises it and it gets cut in half.
Like Sampson in the Barbershop, without it he is vulnerable and justice can finally be done.
